Retainers after orthodontics: why they matter and how to care for them
Orthodontic care continues after braces come off. Retention helps preserve the position of your teeth.
Dental retainers help keep teeth in their corrected positions after orthodontic treatment. Teeth can continue to move over time, which is why the retention phase matters. There is no schedule that fits everyone: the appliance and wear pattern should follow your orthodontist's plan.
What kinds of retainers are there?
- Clear removable retainer: a custom-shaped tray fitting over the teeth. It needs careful cleaning and safe storage.
- Wire-and-acrylic removable retainer: a different custom design that uses several components to hold alignment.
- Fixed retainer: a thin wire bonded behind selected teeth. It stays in while you eat and requires careful daily cleaning.
There is no universal best type. Suitability, bite, habits and your ability to maintain the retainer all matter.
How long will I need to wear mine?
Retention is usually a long-term consideration, and the orthodontist adjusts the schedule based on treatment stability. Stopping without advice can allow teeth to shift. Do not follow someone else's daily timetable: the hours and longer-term use are individual.
Cleaning without damage
- For removable appliances, use a soft brush and cool or lukewarm water, respecting the care guidance for your specific material.
- Avoid very hot water, bleach, alcohol and harsh products that could warp or damage the retainer.
- Keep it in a clean protective case when not in use; napkins at mealtimes are easy to throw away accidentally.
- Clean carefully around a fixed wire and ask which interdental aids are suitable.
What if a retainer feels too tight or breaks?
Do not force it into place, bend the wire or attempt repairs with household glue. An appliance that no longer fits may be damaged or may reflect tooth movement. Ask your orthodontist to check the fit and recommend a next step.
