Dental health in pregnancy: bleeding gums, nausea and check-ups

Pregnancy may change how gums respond to plaque, but does not automatically mean dental check-ups should stop.

During pregnancy, changing hormone levels can make gum tissues respond more strongly to dental plaque. Some people notice bleeding when brushing, tenderness or concerns connected to nausea. Dental care does not automatically need to stop because you are pregnant. Letting your dental team know early helps them plan around your individual circumstances.

Why can gums bleed more easily?

Pregnancy gingivitis refers to gums that are swollen, red, sensitive or prone to bleeding. Hormones can influence the inflammatory response, but plaque remains an important factor. Do not dismiss persistent bleeding as an unavoidable pregnancy symptom; it deserves an assessment and a review of daily cleaning.

Morning sickness and enamel

Repeated vomiting exposes teeth to stomach acid. After an episode, gently rinse your mouth with water and avoid immediately brushing while acid remains on the enamel; ask your dentist for specific advice on managing frequent episodes. Changes in snacking patterns can also increase the number of sugary or acidic exposures during the day.

What to tell your dental team

  • How far along you are, and whether your pregnancy is considered high-risk.
  • Any medicines, allergies or recommendations from your maternity care team.
  • Symptoms such as gum bleeding, pain, swelling or frequent vomiting.
  • Your questions about which treatments are appropriate now and what can be planned later.

Painful infections are not necessarily safer when left untreated. Choices about imaging, local anesthesia, medicines and elective procedures depend on the clinical situation and may require coordination with your obstetric team.

Daily care remains important

Brush gently with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth using an appropriate tool. Arrange follow-up based on your oral health needs; myths about a baby literally taking calcium from teeth should not guide care. Our bleeding gums guide offers additional context. You can discuss a preventive dental assessment at RR Estudio Dental in Obarrio, making sure to tell the clinic about your pregnancy before the appointment.
