Bleeding gums: could it be gingivitis?
Bleeding when brushing deserves attention. Learn the warning signs and helpful habits.
Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss? It is a common concern and one worth understanding without panic or simply accepting it as normal. The cause may be reversible inflammation, but a dental assessment is needed to find out what is happening in your particular case.
Why do gums bleed?
One common reason is plaque building up near the gumline. This film can trigger inflammation known as gingivitis. Gums may look redder than usual, become swollen or bleed during cleaning. They do not always hurt, which is why small changes deserve attention.
Changes in cleaning technique, dental restorations that are difficult to clean, and other health factors may also be relevant. Bleeding alone cannot establish its precise cause.
Gingivitis vs periodontitis
These terms do not mean the same thing. Gingivitis mainly affects the gums and can improve with appropriate care. Periodontitis also damages the tissues supporting the teeth and may require more specific periodontal care and follow-up.
If you notice receding gums, loose teeth or a change in your bite, arrange a dental examination. Such symptoms do not prove a particular diagnosis, but they deserve proper assessment.
Useful steps you can take now
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and a soft toothbrush, using gentle pressure.
- Clean between your teeth daily with floss or suitable interdental brushes.
- Do not abandon oral hygiene because of bleeding; ask how to adapt your technique comfortably.
- Avoid relying on mouthwashes or home remedies as a substitute for understanding the cause.
If the bleeding persists, happens repeatedly, or occurs with soreness and swelling, book a check-up. Professional cleaning or another approach may help depending on the health of your gums; the right treatment is individual.
