Receding gums: exposed roots, sensitivity and next steps
Gum tissue moving away from a tooth can expose its root; mouthwash alone cannot restore it.
Gum recession happens when the gum margin moves away from its former position, exposing more tooth or root surface. A tooth may appear longer, feel sensitive to cold or develop a visible change near the gumline. Receded gum tissue does not simply grow back because of a mouthwash; the important first step is understanding why it changed.
What can contribute to recession?
Periodontal disease, overly forceful brushing, tissue characteristics and tooth position may be involved. Habits and bite factors can matter for some individuals, too. An examination is needed: not every case means an active infection, and bleeding gums are not automatically receding gums.
Gum recession is different from gingivitis
Gingivitis means early gum inflammation, often with bleeding. Recession describes the position of the gum margin. Both can occur together, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses. A periodontal examination considers the gums, plaque, pockets and tooth support.
Caring for an exposed gumline
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid forceful scrubbing along the gum.
- Clean between teeth using a method and size suitable for your mouth.
- Avoid aggressive gum massage, homemade chemicals or products advertised as regrowing gums.
- If cold drinks sting, see our guide to cold-sensitive teeth.
Is gum surgery always required?
No. Depending on the findings, better cleaning technique, control of inflammation and monitoring may be appropriate first steps. Some situations need further periodontal care, and selected cases may be assessed for procedures to cover exposed roots. Depth, stability, sensitivity and overall dental health matter more than any single photo.
Seek an assessment if recession appears to progress or if you notice bleeding, continuing sensitivity or loose teeth. Read about gum care at RR Estudio Dental in Obarrio. Specific treatment options are decided after an individual examination.
