Bruxism: signs of clenching or grinding your teeth
You may grind your teeth without knowing it. Dental wear and jaw symptoms are worth a careful review.
Bruxism means clenching or grinding your teeth while awake or asleep. Not everyone who grinds requires the same intervention, but the habit can be associated with tooth wear, fractures, sensitivity and jaw-muscle discomfort. An examination helps distinguish these signs from conditions that may feel similar.
Signs that can suggest bruxism
- Someone hears you grinding at night, even though you do not recall doing it.
- Your jaw muscles feel tired or sore on waking.
- Your teeth seem flatter, edges chip, sensitivity increases or restorations repeatedly fail.
- You experience jaw, facial or ear discomfort or recurring headaches; these symptoms can also have other causes.
Stress is one possible contributor, not a complete explanation for every case. A headache alone cannot diagnose bruxism.
Will a night guard stop tooth grinding?
A professionally fitted appliance may protect teeth from some of the damage when appropriate. It is not a universal cure for the underlying habit, and over-the-counter guards do not necessarily fit every bite. A dentist should assess the teeth, gums and jaw before selecting an option.
Practical steps without risky shortcuts
If you catch yourself clenching while awake, become aware of the tension and gently let your jaw relax. Avoid chewing gum or hard foods if they increase discomfort. Discuss sleep, stress and other symptoms with the relevant clinician. Never file or reshape your own teeth to change the bite.
What if teeth are already worn or chipped?
Whether a restoration makes sense depends on how much tooth structure remains and the way biting forces are distributed. Our guide to dental crowns describes one possible approach, not a mandatory solution. For pain triggered by cold, see sensitive teeth.
